How do I send SMS text messages in Skype?

To send an SMS text message, first you need to have a little Skype Credit . You can then send an SMS text message to any contact that has a saved phone number.

Note: Sending SMS to US numbers is restricted unless you have a US Skype Number set up as your caller ID.

  • From Chats :

    • On desktop , select a one-to-one chat, select the via Skype drop-down menu above the Type a message box, and then select a phone number if their phone number is connected to their Skype profile.

    • On mobile , select a one-to-one chat, tap the Add to chat Add to chat button, and then tap SMS button SMS .

  • From Calls : Select the dial pad button Dial pad , enter a phone number, then select the SMS button Send SMS button.

  • From a profile : Select the SMS button Send SMS button if they have a phone number connected to their Skype profile.

  • From any tab on desktop : Select the dial pad button Dial pad , enter a phone number, then select the SMS button Send SMS button.

Android 6.0 to 7.1.2

  • From Chats : Select a one-to-one chat, select their name from the chat header, then select the SMS button SMS button under their mobile number.

Note : If your contact has more than one phone number saved, you'll be able to choose which number you want to use.

You can send an SMS text message to almost any number, as long as it's text enabled. Most mobiles and some landlines can receive SMS text messages.

Due to recent policy changes to prevent phishing, sending SMS to US numbers is restricted unless you have a US Skype Number set up as your caller ID. Refunds: Users who were charged for SMS that were not delivered due to this block will receive refunds.

No, you can currently only send SMS text messages to one person at a time.

If the recipient is in the US, has a Skype Number, and has set up caller identification they may be able to receive and reply to your SMS messages in Skype, learn more . Otherwise, when you send a text through Skype, the recipient can't reply to you on Skype. However, you can change the sender ID so it displays your mobile number instead of your Skype Name . The recipient will then be able to reply to your SMS text message and their reply will be sent to your mobile (not to Skype).

In addition to the usual reasons, message delivery failures may also be due to the new restrictions on sending SMS to US numbers. Please ensure that you're complying with the latest requirements, which include having a US Skype Number set up as your caller ID if you're attempting to text US numbers. Refunds: Users who were charged for SMS that were not delivered due to this block will receive refunds.

Also, verify the recipient's phone number and that you have enough Skype credit, then try sending the message again.

If you’re sending a text to someone located in the USA, only the following carriers support receiving Skype SMS text messages: Alltel, ATandT, Cellular One Dobson, Cellular South, Centennial, Cincinnati Bell, Nextel, Ntelos, Sprint, T-Mobile, Unicel, U.S. Cellular®, Verizon Wireless, Virgin Mobile USA.
