How do I start a group instant message in Skype for Windows desktop?

This article is also available for:

A group conversation allows you to send instant messages to two or more contacts simultaneously. You can do this by either creating a group from scratch, or by adding contacts to an existing conversation. Currently, you can add up to 300 contacts to one IM conversation.

Anytime a member of the group sends an instant message, it will be received by all the participants, allowing multiple contacts to chat and share contacts and files with each other, all at the same time. It’s a perfect tool for keeping track on group projects with co-workers or planning events with family or friends.

The following questions and answers will help you with group conversations over Skype.

How do I create a group?

The Create a Group icon in the Skype toolbar.

The Empty group area where you can drag contacts and add them to the group.

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Select the Create a Group icon.
  3. From the contact list, drag the contacts you’d like to add to the group conversation into the highlighted area under Empty group.

Important: If the chat window displays a message that a particular contact won’t be able to participate in the group chat until they upgrade Skype, please inform them by sending a separate 1-to-1 instant message to upgrade at Skype.com/updateme, or send them here for more information on cloud-based group chats.

This creates your group. Simply type and send your first instant message and it will be sent to all members of the group.

How do I add contacts to an existing conversation?

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. From the Recent list, select the conversation you’d like to add new contacts to.
  3. Click the + button to the right of the Call button, then select Add people....

The Add people option that appears when you click the Plus button to the right of the Call button.

  4. Select the contacts you would like to add to the conversation (you can select multiple participants by holding down Ctrl while selecting contacts) and click Select. When you have finished selecting participants, click Add.

Important: If the chat window displays a message that a particular contact won’t be able to participate in the group chat until they upgrade Skype, please inform them by sending a separate 1-to-1 instant message to upgrade at Skype.com/updateme, or send them here for more information on cloud-based group chats.

Only new instant messages will be delivered to new contacts added to a conversation. They will not see any of the messages that were sent before they were added to the group.
