How do I make and receive calls using Skype on my Verizon BlackBerry®?

The following questions and answers will help you with calling your friends, family and colleagues using Skype on your Verizon BlackBerry®.

How do I make a Skype-to-Skype call?

Skype-To-Skype calling is free on your Verizon BlackBerry®, just like it is on your computer. To make a Skype-To-Skype call:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Select the Contacts tab.
  3. Select a contact and press the Menu button.
  4. Select Call.

Remember, a contact must be online to receive calls on Skype. Contacts that are online will have the following icons by their name:

Video calling is not currently available on the Verizon network. We hope to change this in the future, so keep checking back for updates.

How do I call mobiles and landlines?

To call mobiles and landlines from Skype, you will first need to purchase a little Skype Credit or a subscription.

You cannot call domestic numbers from Skype on your Verizon BlackBerry®. All domestic numbers that you have in your phonebook will not be displayed when selecting that option. Find out more.

To call a mobile or landline from Skype on your BlackBerry®:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Select the Call phones tab.
  3. Select a country from the dropdown list and enter the phone number, including the area code.
  4. Press the Call button.

Alternatively, you can select a number from your BlackBerry® phonebook.

How much does it cost to call mobiles and landlines abroad?

All calls to mobiles and landlines abroad from Skype mobile are charged at regular Skype rates, just like when you call from a computer.

Remember, you will need a little Skype Credit or a subscription to call mobiles and landlines abroad.

Why can’t I call domestic numbers?

You can dial US domestic numbers from Skype mobile, but these will automatically be carried as a normal Verizon Wireless calls, using your plan minutes. This way you can continue to benefit from your existing Verizon Wireless calling plan. The application will alert you when this is happening, but if you often call US numbers from within the application, you can choose not to see the message every time by checking the box ‘Do not show this message again’.

Can I make a group call?

You can participate in group call using Skype on your Verizon BlackBerry®, but you can’t host them. To join a group call, when you receive a call, simply tap the green answer button to answer it.

Can I use caller ID with Skype mobile?

Unfortunately, Skype mobile does not support caller ID. When you call phones abroad using Skype on your Verizon phone, your mobile number or Skype Number is not presented as caller ID, even if you have set up caller ID on your Skype account. Instead, “Skype Call” or “Unknown number” is displayed when you make calls to mobiles and landlines from Skype.

What happens if I’m on a Skype call and receive a call to my mobile number?

Any calls made to your mobile number while you are on a Skype call will be forwarded, sent to your Verizon voicemail, or sent to call waiting, depending on what options you have set on your phone. If you have none of these set up, the caller will hear a busy tone. Please visit the Verizon website for information on how to change your settings.

Can I receive calls to my Skype Number?

No. Answering calls to your Skype Number is not a feature supported by Skype mobile on your Verizon BlackBerry®.

What is causing my calls to drop?

You should be able to make calls to mobile and landline numbers abroad as long as you have enough Skype Credit or an appropriate calling subscription. To view your Skype Credit balance and subscription details, sign in to your account and select the Call phones tab. If you need to buy more Skype Credit, simply click Buy more credit and follow the instructions on the screen.
