How do I manage my contacts in Skype for Mac OS X?

Skype for Mac OS X allows you to manage and sort contacts you added to your contact list. This FAQ will help you with:

Create a list

Creating a list is the best way to organize your contacts. When you select a particular list, only contacts within that list will be displayed.

To create a list, simply tag the first person you want in it. The name of the list will appear in the list bar at the top of Skype.

To create a new list:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. In your contact list, find a person you want in a new list. Go to the sidebar and click Contacts, then in the list bar, click Skype. You may have to click >> to see all of your lists.
  3. Right-click the contact and select Add to List….

The Add to List option selected after right-clicking a contact.

  1. In the window that opens, click Create List…, then enter a name for your list and press the return key.

Remember: You can change the order of the lists in the list bar. Just click and drag the list to a new position.

Add or remove contacts in a list

To add a contact to a list:

  1. In your contact list, find a person you want to add to a separate list. You can type their name into the Search box at the top right of the screen, or go to the sidebar and click Contacts, then in the contact list bar, click Skype. You may have to click >> to see all of your lists.
  2. Right-click the contact, select Add to List… and check the list name.
  3. Repeat this for everyone you want in the list.

To remove a contact from a list:

  1. In the list bar, click the list.
  2. Click the contact you would like to remove, and then press Backspace on your keyboard.
  3. Repeat this for everyone you’d like to delete from the list.

To create a Favorites section in the sidebar, go to a contact list, then right-click the contact and select Add to Favorites. This creates a Favorites section at the top of the sidebar, just under Contacts - if there wasn’t one already - and adds the selected contact or conversation.

  5. Click Block. The contact is deleted from your contact list and blocked.

To unblock a contact:

  1. In the main menu, go to Skype > Preferences....
  2. Click Privacy. In the Privacy panel, click Manage Blocked Users. A list of blocked users is displayed.
  3. Click the person you’d like to unblock, and then click Unblock.

Delete a contact

To delete a contact:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Find the person in your contact list. Go to the sidebar and click Contacts, then to the right, click Skype. You may have to click >> to see all of your lists.
  3. Right-click the contact you’d like to delete and select Delete Contact....
  4. A message box opens with the prompt: “Are you sure you want to remove [name of contact] from your contact?” Click Remove.

The contact is deleted from your contact list. This means they cannot see if you are online, but they can still leave you offline instant messages. You can block a contact to prevent them from communicating with you.
