What is the Skype Office Toolbar and how does it work?

The Skype Office Toolbar is not available for download any more, but if you’ve already installed it, you can continue to use it.

The Skype Office Toolbar allows you to make Skype calls and send the files you are currently working on to other people using Skype.

Skype-to-Skype calls made using the Skype Office toolbars are free. However, you will need a little Skype Credit or a subscription to call mobiles and landlines.

Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: Once installed, the Skype Office Toolbar is available in a separate menu at the top of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Microsoft Office 2007: Once installed, the Skype Office Toolbar is available in a separate tab at the top of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint:

You can use the toolbar to perform the following actions:

Action Description
Opening Skype Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: In the Skype menu, click Tools > Open Skype.

Microsoft Office 2007: In the Skype tab, click Open Skype.
Making a call Highlight the number you want to call, right-click it and select Call this phone number in <country> with Skype:

Adding a contact Highlight the number of a contact you want to add, right-click it and select Add SkypeOut Contact. Skype’s Add a contact window is displayed, confirming that the number has been added to your Skype contact list.
Sending a file To send a file you have currently open:
  1. Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: In the Skype menu, click Send File.
    Microsoft Office 2007: In the Skype tab, click Send File.
  2. If the file you have open is new and has never been saved, you will be asked to save it first. If the file has been edited since you last saved it, it is saved automatically. Skype’s Sending file window is displayed.
  3. Select the Skype Name of the person to whom you want to send the file.
  4. Click Send to send the file.
Highlighting numbers This option allows you to highlight any numbers in your document that you could turn into Skype links.

Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: In the Skype menu, click Tools > Highlight Numbers.

Microsoft Office 2007: In the Skype tab, click Highlight Numbers.

Any numbers in your document that can be turned into Skype links will have a faint purple underline:

Creating Skype links This option allows you to turn any highlighted numbers in your document into Skype links.

Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: In the Skype menu, click Create Skype links.

Microsoft Office 2007: In the Skype tab, click Create Skype links.

All highlighted numbers in your document become Skype links that can be used to make a call via Skype:

Removing Skype links This option allows you to remove the Skype links from any numbers in your document that have them.

Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: In the Skype menu, click Remove Skype links.

Microsoft Office 2007: In the Skype tab, click Remove Skype links.
Selecting your default country code To select the default country code to be used when making calls from your document:
  1. Microsoft Office 2000, XP and 2003: In the Skype menu, click Select your country.
    Microsoft Office 2007: In the Skype tab, click Select your country.

  2. Select the country required from one of the drop-down lists displayed or enter the name of the country in the field provided.
  3. Click OK to save the new country code as your default.
   

If you decide that you no longer require the Skype Office Toolbar, you can uninstall it as follows:

  1. Windows Vista and 7: Click Start, type “run” and press Enter.
    Windows XP: Click Start > Run...
  2. Type “appwiz.cpl” and click OK.
  3. Select Skype Toolbar for Microsoft Office from the list, right-click it and select Remove or Uninstall. A message box is displayed, asking if you are sure that you want to uninstall the toolbar.
  4. Click OK to uninstall the Skype Office toolbar.
