Making a video call with Skype 3.2 for Android phones

If your mobile phone meets the minimum requirements, you can start making video calls to anyone on Skype, anywhere in the world, for free.

The following questions and answers will help you get started with video calling on Skype 3.2 for Android phones.

How do I know if my contacts are able to make and receive video calls?

When you select a contact from your contact list, a list of available options is displayed. If the Video call option is listed, the contact is able to make and receive video calls.

How do I make a video call?

Starting a video call on Skype 3.2 for Android phones is easy. To make a video call:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Select the Contacts tab.
  3. Find and select the contact you’d like to video call.
  4. Tap Video call to start your video call.

Alternatively, you can turn on video during a Skype-to-Skype voice call. Simply tap the video camera icon The Video camera icon. during a call to start sending video.

How do I video call my Messenger buddies?

When you sign in to Skype 3.2 for Android with your Microsoft account, you can video call your Messenger buddies, just like you would your Skype contacts.

To receive your video call, your Messenger buddy will need to install the Skype plugin. They will be prompted to do so when you first call them. When they upgrade to Skype, you’ll be able to enjoy all the great Skype features together.

How do I switch between the front and back cameras?

During a video call, tap the video camera icon The video camera icon.. If the video is enabled, the camera currently selected is indicated by an arrow in this icon.

You can choose from the following video options:

  • Front camera: switch to your front facing camera.
  • Back camera: switch to your back facing camera.
  • Video off: this turns your video off (though you will still receive video).

If you can’t see the video camera icon, you may need to tap the screen to bring up the call bar.

On devices running Android 2.2 (Froyo), you can only make video calls using the back camera.

How do I enable Skype video calling on my Android phone?

Depending on your Android phone, you may need to manually enable Skype video calling before you can make a video call to your Skype contacts. To do this:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Press the phone’s menu button or tap the menu icon The Menu icon. on devices running Android 3.0 or higher.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Tick Enable video calling.

If you can't see the video calling settings, it means your Android phone does not meet the minimum requirements needed to make Skype video calls.

If you're using one of the following applications on your Android phone, you will not be able to make video calls:

  • Skype mobile™ for Verizon
  • Skype on au
  • Skype on 3

How do I change my video call settings?

Your video call settings allow you to change your privacy and call quality options.

To edit your video call settings:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Press the phone’s menu button or tap the menu icon The Menu icon. on devices running Android 3.0 or higher.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the Enable video calling settings.

Here you can select from the following options:

  • Receive calls from: choose who you receive Skype video calls from. You can use this option to stop unwanted video calls from unknown people.
  • Technical info: select this option if you want to see technical information about your call.
  • Video quality: choose your video call quality. The higher the quality, the more data a video call will use.
  • Answer calls automatically: select this option if you want incoming voice and video calls to be answered automatically.

How can I ensure the best video call quality?

The quality of a video call depends on available network conditions. The faster your data connection, the better quality your video call will be. We also recommend that you don’t have a large number of other applications running at the same time, as this can use your phone’s memory.

Can I start or participate in a group video call?

Unfortunately, Skype 3.2 for Android does not support group video calls. You can participate in a group call, but only using audio - you won't be able to send or receive video.
