How do I script webpages to find phone numbers using Click to Call?

This FAQ describes how you can script phone numbers to be recognized and highlighted correctly by the Click to Call plug-in on your website. The following sections will help you get started:

Supported phone number formats

To make all phone numbers on your website recognizable by the Click to Call plug-in, you need to write them in the international format. The numbers will be highlighted correctly and your customers can easily call you.

USA phone numbers have the following international format:

+ 1 - City Area Code - Number you wish to call
For example:  +1-862-3135071

The supported format of phone numbers should look as follows:  +CC - NDC - SN, where:

  • CC = Country Code
  • NDC = National Destination Code
  • SN = Subscriber Number

Always use this format for scripting phone numbers on your webpages and make sure you enter the + sign at the beginning of each number.

Checking the number length

Check the length of the phone numbers before publishing them on your website to be sure that they will be recognized. You can use online service* for this. Just select a country from the drop-down list, and you will see the information about the supported number length for that country.

Grouping digits in phone numbers

These are our preferred ways of writing phone numbers:

  • Write all digits of the number together (without any delimiters), for example: +18623135071.
  • Group digits by Country Code, National Destination Code and Subscriber Number, for example: +1-862-3135071.

Supported delimiters

The Click to Call plug-in supports the following delimiters between digits in the phone number:

  • hyphen -
  • space ' '
  • round brackets ()
  • dot .
  • slash /

It’s best to use a hyphen or space so that your numbers will be correctly recognized and highlighted, for example: +1-862-3135071 or +1 862 3135071.

Important:

  • Do not use two identical delimiters together (for example, two space symbols or two hyphens). Such numbers will not be recognized.
  • Do not use two non-space delimiters together (for example, hyphen and round bracket): +1-(862)-3135071.
If you wish to use several delimiters (two or more) at once, put a space symbol between the two non-space delimiters:
    +1 - (862) - 3135071
    +1 - 862 - 3135071.
  • Do not use unsupported delimiters (such as []).
