How do I start using Skype for Windows Phone 7?

The following questions and answers will help you sign in and out of Skype on your Windows Phone 7, and change your Skype settings:

Does Skype work over 3G, 4G and WiFi?

Skype for Windows Phone 7 and all of its features work over 3G, 4G and WiFi. Data charges may occur when using the application over 3G or 4G networks.

Do I need an existing Skype account, or can I join Skype with my Windows Phone?

Even if you’ve never used Skype before, you can join Skype by creating a new Skype account using your phone:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. If you're starting Skype for the first time, review and accept the terms and conditions.
  3. In the sign-in page, tap create account.
  4. You'll be redirected to where you can create a new account.
  5. After creating the account, you can launch the application and sign in.

You’re now ready to make calls, video calls  and send instant messages to your friends. With a little Skype Credit or a subscription , you can also make calls to mobiles and landlines.

The account you created can be used on any other version of Skype, such as Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac or Skype on your TV.

You can also use an existing account if you have one. Simply enter your Skype Name and password, then tap sign in.

To sign out of Skype, simply tap The Menu icon. and select sign out.

Can I sign in to Skype using my Microsoft account?

If you’ve recently joined Skype when you signed in with your Microsoft account on a different platform (such as Windows 8, Mac, Linux), you can still sign in to your Windows Phone 7; you'll just need to take a couple of extra steps first.

Such a Skype account is a technical one, and although it lets you use all of the great Skype features, you’ll need to find your Skype name to sign into your Windows Phone 7. To find your Skype name:

  1. Navigate to on your computer.
  2. Sign in using your Microsoft account.
  3. Click Account Settings under My Account.
  4. Under TV and Home Phone, click Set Up.
  5. You will see your assigned Skype name, and have the option to put in a password. If you do not have a password, create one, as you will need this to sign into Skype on your Windows Phone 7.

You can now sign into Skype on your Windows Phone 7 using your Skype name and password.

Important: If you unlink this Skype name from your Microsoft account, the technical Skype account will be deleted. You can link your Microsoft account to another Skype account, if you wish.

Will I be signed in automatically?

You can choose to sign in automatically every time you start Skype. To do so, after signing in, tap  The Menu icon., then tap settings and check the box to sign in automatically.

Can I be signed in to Skype on my Windows Phone and on my computer at the same time?

You can sign in to Skype on both devices at the same time but we don’t recommend it. Being signed in to Skype on multiple devices may lead to conflicts between settings on the applications and you may find instant messages are delivered to one of the devices and not the other. We recommend only being signed in to Skype on one device at a time.

How do I sign out of Skype?

To sign out of Skype, simply tap The menu icon and select sign out.

Can Skype run in the background?

Skype for Windows Phone 7 does not run in the background. When you navigate away from the application on the device, your status is automatically set to offline. You won't receive incoming calls or chats after you navigate away from Skype.

How do I uninstall Skype for Windows Phone 7?

To uninstall the Skype application:

  1. Tap the start button to go to the home screen.
  2. Swipe to the application list.
  3. Scroll down to find Skype.
  4. Tap and hold Skype, then select uninstall.
