Getting started with Skype (Mac)

If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at our guide to finding your way around Skype.

If you've never used Skype before, don’t worry -- it’s easy to get started.

All you need to do is:

  • Join Skype - get a free account to enjoy instant messages and free calls and video calls with your friends.
  • Get Skype – Download Skype to your computer.
  • Sign in to Skype – Sign in and add your friends as contacts, then call, video call and instant message with them, wherever you are.

It's that simple.

To join Skype

Never used Skype before? Don’t worry, you can join us by signing in with your Microsoft or Facebook accounts or you can simply create a new Skype account.


Go to Create an account.


Enter your name and email address.  

Personal details


Enter your profile information. The more details you enter here, the easier it will be for your friends to find you on Skype.


Enter a Skype Name. This is the name your friends will use to contact you on Skype.

Profile information

It needs to have between 6-32 characters, start with a letter and contain only letters and numbers (no spaces or special characters).

Important: After you have created your Skype Name, you can’t change it, so make sure you’re happy with it.

If someone already has the Skype Name you’ve entered, select one of the suggestions displayed or try entering a different one.


 Enter the password you want to use to sign in to Skype. Your password is case sensitive, needs to be between 6 and 20 characters, and needs to contain at least one letter and one number.


Enter the security words displayed in the box. This just verifies that you’re a real person.

Read the Skype Terms of Use and the Skype Privacy Policy, then click I agree – Continue.

To download the latest version of Skype


Download Skype.


When the .dmg file has finished downloading, a Finder window opens. If it doesn’t open, go to the Finder, open the Download folder and click the Skype .dmg file.


In the Finder window, drag the Skype logo on to the Applications folder.


Go to the Applications folder and double-click the Skype icon to start Skype. 


When you see the Skype icon in the Dock, ctrl-click it and select Options > Keep in Dock. Next time you want to start Skype, you can simply click the icon in the Dock.

Signing in to Skype

Make sure that you’re connected to the internet and follow the steps below to sign in to Skype with your Skype account:


In the Welcome screen, choose Skype Name or Microsoft account (depending on which type of account you have).

You might also see the login screen below; if that's the case, just enter your Skype Name, email address (for Microsoft account), or phone number to log in. Learn more.

2 Enter your user name and password and click Sign In.

Now that you’ve signed in to Skype, you can check your sound and video to make sure they are set up correctly and edit the profile for your Skype account.

Alternatively, you can sign in to Skype with your Microsoft or Facebook account.

You’re now ready to add your friends as contacts, then call, video call and instant message with them.
