How does Skype in the background affect network and battery usage?

Skype requires continuous network connectivity. When Skype is running in the background, it will keep the network active to listen for incoming calls. This will require some network usage and increased battery power to maintain the network connectivity.

To extend battery life, you can completely quit Skype by “swiping” the Skype application closed. It will no longer listen for calls in the background, and will not use additional network or battery resources.
