How can I check if my microphone, speakers and camera are working properly with Skype (Skype for modern Windows)?

You can easily check if your audio and video devices are working seamlessly with Skype for modern Windows. This FAQ will help you make sure everything’s connected and working properly.

 

 

 

If you blocked your camera and microphone when you first singed in to Skype, you need to enable them manually.

To make sure that you enabled Skype to use your webcam and microphone:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. Move your mouse to the upper right corner or swipe from the right of the screen to bring up the charms.
  3. Tap or click Settings, then select Permissions.
  4. Check the settings under Webcam and microphone. If they are turned off, drag the slider to turn them on.

To view your audio and video settings:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. Move your mouse to the bottom right corner of the screen or swipe right of the screen to bring up the charms.
  3. Tap or click Settings.
  4. In Settings, select Options.
  5. In the Options panel, you’ll be able to check your audio and video settings.

Audio devices

To make sure that your microphone is working properly:

  1. Select the drop-down menu under Audio, next to Microphone, to view the list of recognized devices.
  2. Select the device you want to check.
  3. Talk in your microphone and check if the level bars next to Microphone are blue and moving up and down to indicate your voice volume levels.

To make sure that your speakers are working properly:

  1. Select the drop-down menu under Audio, next to Speakers, to view the list of recognized devices.
  2. Select the device you want to check.
  3. Tap or click the arrow next to Speakers. You will hear the Skype ringtone. If you can hear it properly, your speakers are working just fine with Skype.

Video devices

Select the camera you want to check from the drop-down menu under Video, next to Camera. If you can see the video stream in the window next to Camera, your camera works fine with Skype.

If your audio or video devices are not working properly with Skype:

  1. Check if they are plugged in properly (if you’re using external devices).
  2. Try to use them with another application to see if they’re working correctly.
  3. Install or update the device drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
