Here are some easy fixes for common problems you might encounter when you can't sign into Skype for Windows Phone 8.

I can't see my usual Skype contacts or Skype credit. What do I do?

You may have linked your Microsoft account to a different Skype account, or created a new one. Don't worry: you can easily unlink them and then link the correct accounts.

I can’t remember my Microsoft account name

If you can’t remember the Microsoft account name you used to set up your Windows Phone:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. Tap Need help signing in?
  3. Tap show user name.

Your Microsoft account name is the email address that appears under Microsoft account in your email+accounts settings.

I can't remember my Microsoft account password

If you can’t remember the password of the Microsoft account you used to set up your Windows Phone:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. Tap Need help signing in?
  3. Tap reset password.

Follow the steps to reset your password.

Alternatively, you can reset your password from any browser.

When I try to link my Skype name to my Microsoft account, I get a message saying it’s already linked

If the Skype account you use is already linked to a Microsoft account, try signing in with your Microsoft account to see if the correct accounts are linked.

If you find that the accounts linked are not the ones you wanted to link, you can unlink them and then link the proper accounts.

The screen is blank when I try to sign in with my Microsoft account

If you see a blank screen when attempting to sign in with your Microsoft account, it's most likely you have a data connection problem.

Try checking your connection (for example, moving to an area with stronger Wi-Fi or better mobile coverage) and try again.

I get a certificate error when I try to sign in to Skype for Windows Phone 8

If you're attempting to sign into Skype for Windows Phone 8 with your Microsoft account and are unable to do so (you get a certificate error), it's likely the date and time settings on your phone are incorrect.

To correctly set the date and time on your Windows Phone 8:

  1. Tap Settings on your phone's menu.

  2. Tap date+time.

  3. Move the Set automatically slider to On.

You will now be able to sign into Skype for Windows Phone 8 with your Microsoft account.

You only need to sign in to Skype for Windows Phone 8 once, when you launch the app for the first time. Then, you’ll be signed in automatically every time you start Skype.

If you have the latest version of Skype for Windows Phone 8.1, you can also use Single Sign-On (SSO), but only if you use a Microsoft account to sign into Skype. Single Sign-On means that you only have to sign into your phone, and you will automatically be logged into Skype (without having to enter your Microsoft account details when you open the app).

Skype for Windows Phone 8 and all of its features work over 3G, 4G and WiFi. Operator data charges may apply when using Skype over 3G or 4G networks.
