Help Modern Windows

Can I sign out of Skype (Skype for modern Windows)?

Skype for modern Windows has been designed to be always on, so you never miss a message. However, if you do not wish to be disturbed, you can easily sign out (see "Sign out of Skype for modern Windows, below).

If you want to simply turn off notifications, close the app, make yourself invisible, or stop Skype from running in the background, click the appropriate section below to learn how.

  1. Tap or click your profile icon in the top right corner of Skype Home.

  2. The profile sidebar appears.
  3. Tap or click sign out.

If you want to sign back in, you can simply click the Sign In button; there's no need to re-enter your password.

If you want to sign in to Skype for modern Windows with a different Skype account (Microsoft account), you can easily create another Windows 8 user account, link it to your desired Microsoft account, and sign in to Skype with that account.

You can also easily close the application, or you can stay online and control how much you see of Skype and how much your contacts see of you.

If you want to close Skype for modern Windows, simply press the Alt+F4 key combination on your keyboard or, if you have a touch screen, swipe from the top all the way down the screen.

If you want to stay online but simply don’t want to be disturbed, you can turn off Skype notifications or set your status to invisible.

If you don’t want to see anything when you receive a message or call:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. In Skype Home, move the mouse to the bottom right corner or swipe from right to make the charms appear, then tap or click Settings.
  3. In Settings, tap or click Permissions.
  4. Under Notifications, drag the slider to Off

If you don’t want your friends to see that you’re online:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. In Skype Home, in the upper right corner, tap or click your profile picture. The profile sidebar opens.
  3. Tap or click Invisible.

When you’re invisible, you can still make calls and send instant messages to you contacts.

If you only want Skype to run when you open it:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. In Skype Home, move the mouse to the bottom right corner or, if you have a touch screen, swipe from right to make the charms appear, then tap or click Settings.
  3. In Settings, tap or click Permissions.
  4. Under Lock Screen, drag the slider to Off.

This will stop Skype from running when you’re not using it and will also stop any notifications from appearing in the lock screen. If you set this option to Off, you won’t be able to multitask with Skype.
