How can I instant message and call my Lync contacts in Skype for Mac OS X?

When you sign in to the latest version of Skype for Mac OS X, with your Microsoft account, you can call and instant message the Microsoft Lync users.

The following questions and answers will help you add the Lync users to your contacts, call and instant message them:

How do I add a Lync user to my contacts?

Lync users are listed in the Skype directory, so it’s easy to add a Lync user to your contact list:

  1. Sign in to Skype with your Microsoft account.
  2. In the side bar, click Contacts > Add Contact.
  3. In the search bar, enter the email address of the Lync user you want to add and click Find.
  4. In the list of matches, “Lync” is displayed under the email address of the Lync users. Simply select the add contact icon next to the person you want to add.

  5. In the send a Lync contact request window that appears, click Send.

    Your Lync contact will appear offline until they accept your request. When they’ve accepted your request, you’ll find them in your All and Online contact lists.

How do I accept a contact request from a Lync user?

If you’re signed in to Skype with your Microsoft account, the Lync users can add you to their contact lists. When a Lync user sends you a contact request, it will appear in your Recent conversations. Just select it to open the contact request and click Accept.

How do I instant message and call my Lync contacts from Skype?

Once you’ve added a Lync user to your contact list, or if you accepted the contact request from a Lync user, you can call and instant message them from Skype:

  1. Sign in to Skype with your Microsoft account.
  2. In the side bar, click Contacts and select the All or Online contact list.
  3. Search for the person you want to contact and hover over their picture to see the green call button.
  4. Click the little down arrow and select Instant Messages… to send them an instant message, or Call to start a call.

    If the status of your Lync contact is Do not disturb, you won’t be able to call them. The call will be automatically ended as not answered.

The Lync contact will then appear in your Recent list along with your other recent conversations.

How do I call a Lync contact on their mobile or landline?

If your Lync contact is offline, you simply can call them on their mobile or landline number. You’ll only need a little Skype Credit or a subscription.

To call a Lync contact from Skype on their mobile or landline:

  1. In the sidebar, click Contacts.
  2. Select the All or Online contact list.
  3. Search for the Lync user you want to contact and hover over their picture to see the green call button.
  4. If you have not added a mobile or landline number to them yet, click Add Contact Number…, then select the type of number, their country code using the flag drop-down list, type their number into the box and click Add.
  5. Hover over the picture of your contact, click the little down arrow and select their mobile or landline number.

You can IM and call your Lync contacts but, at the moment, some feature such as video calling, screen sharing and sending files or contacts, are not available.
