Sending an instant message

Instant messaging is free on Skype for Android phones, just like it is on your computer. To send an instant message:

 

 

 

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Go to People.
  3. Select a contact and type your message in the text field.
  4. To send your message, tap the send button.

    The message you want t send displayed.
     

To add emoticons to your instant messages, simply tap the emoticon icon The emoticon icon. and select the one you’d like to send.

If you want to send a file, tap the plus icon The plus icon. and tap Send files.

To edit or remove your instant messages, just tap and hold the message and select Edit message or Remove message. These options are not available in older conversations.

Instant messaging your Messenger buddies

With Skype for Android, it’s now possible to sign in to Skype with your Microsoft account and instant message your Messenger buddies from Skype, just like you would your Skype contacts. When you sign in to Skype with your Microsoft account, all your Messenger buddies appear in your contact list automatically.

If your Messenger buddies upgrade to Skype, you’ll be able to reach them even more easily and you will enjoy all the great Skype features together.

Editing instant messages

You can edit or delete an instamt message within 60 minutes after you've sent it. You have to be in an active conversation to be able to perform the following actions:

To edit an instant message:

  1. Tap and hold the message you’d like to edit.
  2. Select Edit message.
  3. A text field with the message opens. Edit it and tap the confirmation button The confirmation icon. to confirm.

To copy an instant message:

  1. Tap and hold the message you’d like to copy.
  2. Select Copy message.
  3. The message is copied to your phone’s clipboard and can be pasted to another IM conversation or a different application.

To quote an instant message:

  1. Tap and hold the message you’d like to quote.
  2. Select Quote message.
  3. The message with the timestamp and author’s name appears in the text field.
  4. Tap the text field to edit the message if needed, then tap the send button The send button..

To delete an instant message:

  1. Tap and hold the message you’d like to delete.
  2. Select Remove message.
  3. Tap Yes.

Finding recent instant messages

If you close an instant message conversation and someone sends you a message, you’ll find it under Recent along with your instant message history.

Your instant messages are listed in chronological order. Unread messages are highlighted in orange.

To view an instant message, simply tap it.
 

Using special formatting

You can use basic text markup in chats to use special formatting:

  • Surrounding text with asterisks (*) will change the text to bold. (Example: *sample text*)
  • Surrounding text with underscores (_) will change the text to italics. (Example: _sample text_)
  • Surrounding text with tildes (~) will change the text to strikethrough (Example: ~sample text~)
  • Surrounding the text with {code} will change the text to monospace font (Example: {code}sample text{code})
  • Placing two exclamation points and a space  (!! ) at the beginning of a message will send the entire message in monospace font (Example: !! sample text)
  • Placing two at symbols and a space (@@ ) at the beginning of a message will prevent or override special formatting (Example: @@ sample text)
