How do I add security info to my Microsoft account?

When you sign in to Skype with your Microsoft account, you might be asked to add security info to your Microsoft account.

Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with it, we just want to make sure your account is always protected and that you don’t lose access to it, so we need to verify your details once or twice in a year.

The following questions and answers will help you with the verification process:

How do I add security info to my Microsoft account?

  1. Sign in to Skype with your Microsoft account. A pop-up window appears.
  2. From the drop-down list, select one of the two options to add security info to your Microsoft account:

    • Phone number – enter your phone number to receive the security code in an SMS text message or a phone call
    • Alternate email address – enter a different email address you have access to so you can receive the security code via email
  1. Click Next.
  2. A pop-up window appears with the following message: “We just sent you a code to <email address or phone number>.” Keep the window open.
  3. When you receive the security code, enter it in the window. Then click Next.
  4. You will be signed in to your account on the Skype website.

If you don’t provide the security code you’ve received to verify your Microsoft account within 7 days, your account will be locked out. The reason is to protect it against misuse.

If your account gets locked out, simply repeat the verification process. After you provide the security code, your account will be recovered.

I’ve already verified my Microsoft account. Why am I asked to do so again?

If you haven’t verified your Microsoft account for more than six months, a new verification is required to make sure that your account is secure and you’re the only person that accesses it.
