What is caller identification and how do I set it up in Skype?

    Back to search results

Caller identification lets your friends, family, and business contacts know that it's you calling them or sending an SMS message. When you set up caller identification, your mobile number or Skype Number is displayed when you call mobiles and landlines from Skype.

Caller identification is free to set up and use.

To set up caller identification using your mobile number:

    1. Open the Skype app.
    2. Select your profile picture, then select Settings.
    3. Select Calling, then select Caller ID.
    4. Turn the Caller ID toggle On.
    5. Select your country from the drop-down list.
    6. Enter your mobile number in the text box and select Add phone number.
    7. You will receive an SMS text message on your phone containing a confirmation code. Enter this code in the field displayed. Message and data rates may apply to receive this one-time SMS.
    8. Select Continue.
    9. If you entered the code correctly, you will get a confirmation message, and your Caller ID will be activated in 24 hours.

To ensure transparency and assist you in managing your expectations, we’ve detailed some country-specific limitations regarding the use of caller identification (CLI). Please review the following information carefully before making international calls.

    Estonia

    • Issue: International calls to Estonia using Estonian Skype number Caller Line Identifications (CLIs, also known as FIX numbers) may be blocked by our telecommunication partners.
    • Recommendation: We recommend checking back for future updates on this issue.
    Norway
    • Issue: Calls to Norway may not go through if a Norwegian mobile CLI is used. This is due to specific regulations and technical limitations within the Norwegian telecommunications infrastructure.
    • Recommendation: Please consider using an alternative number or method for contacting recipients in Norway to ensure connectivity.
    Australia (Telstra)
    • Issue: Starting February 19, Telstra will begin blocking any calls received at interconnection Points of Interconnect (POIs) that carry Telstra-held mobile CLIs. This measure is part of Telstra’s ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with Australian telecommunications standards.
    • Recommendation: If you are using a Telstra-held mobile CLI, you may need to explore alternative caller identification options to continue making calls to and from Australia effectively.
