I have a problem downloading Skype for Windows desktop

It's important that you only download Skype from the Skype website. Do not download it from anywhere else. If you have downloaded a Skype install file but you're not sure if it is from Skype, we suggest that you download it again from our website.

Need to make a call right now? If you don't have time to work through the steps below, you can use Skype for Web (Beta) to make calls or send messages direct from your browser. You don’t need to download or install Skype.

    Troubleshooting your download issue

Before you begin, check the Heartbeat blog to see how Skype's products and features are performing. If there is a problem reported there, keep checking -- we’ll let you know as soon as we fix it.

Try using a different browser to download Skype.

Close any applications that use the internet (especially those that might be playing music or video) and cancel any file downloads. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure you have a good signal. Then try again.

Ensure that your browser allows pop-up windows, or add to your pop-up blocker exceptions list.

Temporarily disable any download management software (such as Download Accelerator) you may be running. You can re-enable this once the download has completed.

Temporarily disable any security software, such as a firewall or antivirus, you may be running. You can re-enable this once the download has completed.

Make sure that you download Skype to a folder on your computer, not to a network drive, which may not be accessible.

Make sure that you have read and write access to the folder you’re downloading to. If you are unsure whether you have read and write access to a location, save the download to your Documents folder or to the desktop.

If you have followed the advice above but still can't download Skype, try downloading Skype on another computer, then transferring the Skype install file to your computer.

After you have downloaded Skype, run the install file and follow the on-screen instructions. (If you have previously installed Skype, make sure it is not open before you run the install file. The quickest way to do this is to right-click the Skype icon displayed in the task bar and select Quit.)
