Calling mobiles and landlines (Windows desktop)

Have you downloaded Skype and joined us? Then you’re ready to get calling.

Make low cost calls to mobiles and landlines from Skype, with a little Skype Credit (for pay as you go calls) or a monthly subscription. Use the dial pad to enter a phone number, or call a number attached to your contact's profile when they are offline on Skype.

Calling a number using dial pad

You can easily dial a phone number using the dial pad in Skype, just like on any phone:

Sign in to Skype

Click the call phones icon.

Enter the phone number (or click the numbers on the dial pad) and click the green call button The green call button..

 If you're calling abroad, enter the country code (for example, +1 for the United States), or click the flag above the dial pad and select a country from the list.

If you call this number regularly, click the Add to Contacts button under the dial pad. In the box that pops up, enter a name for the number and click Save.

Next time you want to call this number, just look it up in your contact list so you don't have to type it in again.

Calling a recently dialed number

It’s easy to call a phone number that you’ve dialed just recently:

Click the call phones icon.

In the Enter number box, click the recent numbers button.

Select the number you want to call.

Calling a contact on their mobile or landline

If a contact has saved a phone number in their profile, or if you’ve added a number to a contact, then it’s easy to call them when they’re not on Skype. You can either find the contact in your contact list, or type their name using the dial pad.

To call from your contact list:

Sign in to Skype.

Click the Contacts tab, then find and click the contact you want to call. You’ll see their details in the main window.

If they’re offline in Skype, or if they don’t have a Skype account, you’ll see a Call Home, Call Mobile or Call Office button (depending on which numbers are saved for that contact).

Click the call button, or click the down arrow for more call options, and select a different number, such as Mobile for example.

To call from the dial pad:

1 Sign in to Skype.

Click the call phones icon.

Type the name of the contact you want to call. A list of possible contact names and numbers is displayed.

Select the contact you'd like to call.

Adding a number to a contact

To add a number to a contact:

1 Sign in to Skype.
2 Click the Contacts tab, then find and click the person you want to add a number for. You’ll see their details in the main window.

Click the down arrow on the call button and select Add phone number.

Select the type of number (Mobile, Home, Office or Other), change the country flag if you need to, and type the phone number into the box.

Click the tick icon or press Enter. The number is saved.

Useful things you can do on a call

There are lots of things you can do during a call:

 Call options displayed during a call.

  1. Hide or reveal your Contact, Facebook, and Recent list.
  2. Send instant messages during the call.
  3. Turn your camera on or off.
  4. Mute your microphone so the other person can't hear you.
  5. Display more options to:

  7. Check your call quality settings and adjust your speaker volume.
  8. View or exit full screen mode.
