How do I call phones in Skype for Windows desktop?

Sometimes you need to call someone who's not on Skype or who is offline. You can call mobiles and landlines all over the world at low rates from Skype with a little Skype Credit or a monthly subscription.

Check out this short video to get started with calling phones, or follow the steps below.

To call a number from the dial pad:

  1. In Skype, click the dial pad button.

    The dial pad is displayed.
  2. If you're calling abroad, select the country you’re calling from the drop-down and then type the phone number, or click or tap the numbers on the dial pad.

  3. Click the blue Call button .

If you call this number regularly, you can save it as a contact so you don’t have to enter the number next time. At the end of the call, click the Add to Contacts button, enter your friend’s name and click Save.

To call a number you've recently dialed:

  1. Click the dial pad button to show the dial pad.

If a contact has saved a phone number in their profile, or if you've added their phone number, it's really easy to call them. You can call from your contact list or from the dial pad.

To call a phone from your contact list:

  1. In Skype, click Contacts.

  2. Select the person you want to call. You'll see their details in the main window.
  3. Hover your mouse over the blue Call button in the top right. If there's a phone number saved for that contact, a drop-down arrow will appear. Click the arrow and select the number you want to call.

If the contact you want to call has not added their number, you can add it to their profile. Click the contact's photo to bring up their profile, and click Add number.

Select the type of number from the drop-down (Mobile, Home, Office or Other), choose the country code, type the phone number and click the tick to save.

To call a contact from the dial pad:

  1. Click the dial pad button to show the dial pad.

    Dial pad icon
