Sending and managing group instant messaging with Skype for Android

Whether it's friends, family, or colleagues, wherever you are, group chat makes it easy to stay in touch with the groups of people who matter most. Here's how to get started and make the most of chatting in your group.

Start a group instant message

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap the Recent tab.

  3. Tap the floating action button  in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  4. Tap the Chat button.
  5. Type the name of a contact or tap the contacts icon to select a person from your contact list.
  6. Add existing contacts by tapping Add participants in the menu.

Alternatively, you can also create an empty group chat:

  1. Tap the checkmark in the upper right corner of the screen.

  2. Tap Share chat in the empty group to share a unique link.
    • Friends and family just click the link to join the chat.
  3. Add existing contacts by tapping Add participants in the menu.

If you’re using the latest version of Skype, the chat administrator can use the Share chat feature to invite anyone to join your conversation.”

From the group chat menu, select Share chat.


This creates a URL that can be shared through any of the apps on your device. Just select the app you want to use to share the URL.


After sharing the URL, anyone that clicks that link can join your group conversation. Even if the link is shared with someone who's on a PC and doesn't have Skype installed, they can join as a guest on Skype for Web.

If you no longer want people to join the conversation after you've created the URL, just go back to the group chat menu and select Share Chat again to disable the option.

After the group has been created, you can tap the chat header for the following options:

  • Add participants
  • Remove participants (if you are the administrator of the chat)
  • Change group avatar by tapping it

Schedule a call

Schedule a call with your group so you can hear their friendly voices or see them eye to eye. 

  1. Go to the Recent tab.
  2. Tap the group you want to plan a call with. 
  3. Tap the phone's menu button, and then tap Schedule a call

  4. If you have the Outlook app installed, tapping Schedule a call will allow you to create a new Outlook event. 

    If you don't have the Outlook app installed, you can easily download and install it after tapping Schedule a call. If you prefer to use an alternate calendar app, tap Select app and choose the calendar app you want to use.

Other options for managing group conversations

When tapping the phone's menu button, you will see the following options:

  • Add participants
  • Mark unread
  • Schedule a call
  • Rename group
  • Participants
  • Leave 
  • Disable notifications
  • Ringtone options
  • Share chat
  • Delete chat

If you leave a conversation, you can find and rejoin it from Recent.
