    Having problems with your Skype calls on iOS? Your internet connection – or your friend’s – is the most likely culprit. A poor internet connection can cause dropped calls, delays, and poor quality audio and video. The following tips should help.

    1. Check your internet connection.
      For a high quality call, both you and your friend need to have enough bandwidth. Use a speed test app to check the performance of your mobile connection, and check the result against the download and upload speeds required for Skype. Be sure to have your friend test their connection as well. If you have a slow connection while on a video call, we recommend turning off your video and having an audio call instead.

    2. Make a test call
      Skype’s free test call is the easiest way to test your sound – it prompts you to record a message, and then plays it back for you to hear. Type echo123 into the search field in Skype to get started, then call and follow the instructions. We have a handy guide to explain how to make a test call.

    3. Are you using the latest version of Skype?
      For the best performance, make sure that you and the person you’re calling are using the latest version of Skype. Get the latest version from Skype, or go to the App store to download Skype for iPhone or iPad.

    If you’ve checked your connection and you’re able to make a test call, but you’re still having problems with call quality, choose your problem below.

    If you can’t hear the other person and you’ve both followed the tips at the beginning of this article, try the following.

    1. Increase the volume
      If you’re in a noisy area, it may be difficult to hear the other person well. Turn up the volume on your device, and if possible move to a quieter space. If you’re in speakerphone mode, check that your hand isn’t covering the speaker. It might be helpful to cup your hand in front of the loudspeaker and use it to direct the sound towards you.

    2. Switch between handset and speakerphone mode
      If you’re on an audio call on a mobile phone, you can switch between speakerphone mode (where you hold the phone in front of you) and handset mode (where you hold the phone to your ear as you would for a normal phone call). This can help improve the audio, especially if you’re in a noisy space.
      To switch between speakerphone and handset mode, tap the speakerphone button. 

    3. Use a headset
      If you prefer to have a video call, or if you’re using a tablet and therefore can’t switch to handset mode, we recommend plugging in earphones or a headset.

    4. Improve the sound at the other end
      The problem may be at the other end. Ask your friend to follow the tips in our guide to solving microphone issues (if they’re using a mobile device they should read the tips below).

    If the other person can’t hear you and you’ve both followed the tips at the beginning of this article, try the following.

    1. Check the microphone
      Make sure your microphone is working well. Dust and pocket lint can be surprisingly troublesome, and it’s easy to accidentally cover the microphone with your hand, especially if you’re not aware of where it is.

    2. Reduce echo
      Echo usually sounds like noise ‘bursts’ rather than recognizable speech, and is quite common especially in speakerphone mode. If your friend is experiencing echo, lowering the playback volume on your device should help. Alternatively, use headphones or a headset.

    If you and your friend can’t see each other at all, or if the picture quality is poor (too dark, blurred, pixelated or freezes) these tips should help.

    1. Check that video is switched on
      When you’re in a video call, make sure that your video is switched on. Sometimes Skype will automatically turn off video to save bandwidth. If the video button is white, like this, it means it’s switched off.


      Tap the button to switch it on.

    2. Follow the tips at the top of this article
      Most video issues on mobile devices are caused by problems with the internet connection. Check your connection speed, and make sure that both you and the person you’re calling are using the latest version of Skype. If you still have issues, we recommend leaving your video off and having an audio call instead.

    3. Improve the lighting conditions
      A well-lit room can make a big difference to the video quality of your calls. For example, if you have a bright light behind you pointing into your webcam, your face will appear dark and featureless to the other person. If the room is too dark, your webcam will try to amplify the light to make the picture brighter, which reduces the video quality. For best results, make sure there is enough ambient light, and avoid back light.
      If you’re outside this is a little more difficult. Try to put your phone or tablet between yourself and the sun, or use your hand to create a shadow on the camera.
