Having problems with your Skype calls? Your internet connection – or your friend’s – is the most likely culprit. A poor internet connection can cause dropped calls, delays, and poor quality audio and video. You will also see the Call Quality indicator when there is an issue. The following tips should help.
Use the latest version of Skype. We're always improving call quality, so for best performance, make sure that you and the person you're calling are using the latest version of Skype. Download the latest version.
Test your connection. For a high quality call, both you and your friend need to have enough bandwidth. Use a speed test app to check the performance of your mobile connection, and check the result against the download and upload speeds required for Skype. If you have a slow connection while on a video call, we recommend turning off your video and having an audio call instead.
Is another application interfering with your call? Close any applications that could be interfering with your call. File sharing applications, streaming audio or video, or even just having a browser open are all things that can eat up bandwidth.
First, make sure you and the person you're calling install the latest version of Skype, check that you have a good connection, and close any applications that might be interfering with your call - then follow these steps:
Make sure your microphone and speakers aren't muted and work properly. Try moving closer to the microphone, reducing background noise, or cupping your hand in front of the loudspeaker. Try switching between handset and speaker mode or using a headset.
Use Echo / Sound Test Service to make a test call. Skype's free test call is the easiest way to test your sound - it prompts you to record a message, and then plays it back for you to hear. How to make a test call. If you can't hear the voice on the test call, continue to the next step.
Check your audio. Try playing a song or using another application with sound. If you can hear it, the problem may be with the other person on the call - ask them to follow these steps too.
Make sure you and the person you’re calling install the latest version of Skype, check that you have a good connection, and close any applications that might be interfering with your call.
Make sure your camera is on, pointing towards you and there’s nothing obstructing it. Sometimes Skype turns off video to save bandwidth. If the video button has a line through it, tap the button to switch it on.

Check the manufacturer’s website. With so many brands and devices, there may be several reasons why something may not work. Each brand is different, so it’s always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s website for user guides or troubleshooting help.
