Why should I upgrade to the latest version of Skype? Upgrading to the latest version of Skype ensures you have the best possible Skype experience. That means you're getting all the newest improvements and features that make staying in touch easier, no matter which platform you choose.
To seamlessly transfer your login information and to preserve your conversation history when upgrading:
- Verify what version number of Skype you’re using on your computer.
- If you're on version 7 or lower, select the Launch Skype to Upgrade button below to launch Skype and start the upgrade process.

- Once you're in Skype, to check for updates, select Help from the top toolbar, and then select Check for Updates.
- Select the upgrade option and follow the onscreen steps.

Do I have to upgrade to the latest version?
Running the latest version of Skype will ensure that you have the best possible Skype experience.
Updating to version 8 of Skype is not mandatory at this time, but support for version 7 of Skype (also known as classic Skype) will be ending soon. We want to ensure that you have the smoothest upgrade experience and are able to upgrade when it is most convenient for you. Upgrade today so that you don’t experience any interruptions in Skype service in the future.
What will happen when I upgrade?
When you upgrade from version 7 to version 8 of Skype, your contacts, history, sign in credentials and application shortcuts will be preserved.

Is the upgrade free?
Yes. You can download and install the latest version of Skype free of charge.
I tried to upgrade, why does my Skype still look the same?
Double check using the steps at the beginning of this article to make sure you've upgraded to version 8 of Skype. If not, try the upgrade process again.
Will I lose any conversation history when I upgrade?
Your complete history will continue to be available on your machine after upgrade. None of your conversation history will be lost during the upgrade.
Your conversation history from the last year will be displayed in the upgraded client. Older history will be transferred to a local file on your machine that you can use, to search and view your conversation history outside of Skype. History older than a year is only stored locally on your machine and is not backed up in the cloud. We recommend that you export and save it to your own cloud storage location.
To find the history file:
- Select the top menu button, and then select Application Settings.
- Scroll down and select Export chat history.
- The wizard will walk you through the steps to export your history.
Why are my contacts, history and credits completely missing after the upgrade?
Make sure that you are signed in to the new Skype application with the same Skype credentials that you use on version 7 for Skype.
