How are my contact details used in Skype?

    Back to search results

You can have different contact details in your Skype profile (which is used only in Skype) and your Microsoft account (which you can use with Microsoft products like Outlook, Xbox, and Skype). Skype uses some of these contact details, like your email address or phone number, in different ways. In this article, we will describe how your Microsoft account and Skype profile information is used.

In your Skype profile, you can add a mobile phone number. You aren't required to have one, but if you do, Skype can use it to display when you call mobiles and landlines if you set up caller ID.

You can also choose to be searchable by the phone number you have saved to your Skype profile, unless you opt out of search. If you want to change or remove your phone number in Skype, you can do that in your Skype profile.

When you add a mobile number to your Skype profile, you will need to verify your phone number.

In your Skype profile, you need to have a primary email address. Skype uses this email address primarily to send you important communications about your Skype account. You can choose to opt out of other Skype email communications regarding special offers, new features, or invitations to take part in marketing research in your Skype profile.

You can also choose to be searchable in Skype by your primary email address or any supplementary email address, unless you opt out of search. If you want to change your primary email address in Skype, you can do that in your Skype profile.

In your Microsoft account, you can set up a mobile phone number as an alias to sign in to Microsoft products and services. If your number is your primary alias in your Microsoft Account, Skype will use this phone number to sign you in.

Skype will also use this number to find you in searches, unless you opt out of search.
