Why can't I sign in to Skype for Windows desktop?

Close any applications that use the internet (especially those that might be playing music or video) and cancel any file downloads. If you’re using a wireless connection, make sure you have a good signal. Also, check that ports on your computer are open. Then try signing in again.

Sometimes your computer may think you are signed in to Skype when you are not. To fix this, make sure that Skype is no longer running, restart Skype, and then sign in.

Is your computer running slowly?

Close any open applications. If you’re using a laptop, make sure it is not in a power-saving mode by plugging it in and switching it to maximum performance mode. Also, make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements to run Skype.

Are you using the latest version of Skype?

Upgrading to the latest version of Skype may fix your problem. If you're not sure which version of Skype you're using, it's easy to find out.

Have you made any changes to your computer?

If you’ve made any changes to your computer, such as installing or uninstalling software, adding new hardware, or changing the registry settings, you may need to restart your computer. Undoing your changes may also help.

Do you use a firewall?

Some firewalls may require permission for Skype. To resolve this, make sure that your firewall is configured to allow Skype to access the network.

Are you connected to the Internet through a proxy server?

You can connect to Skype through a proxy server but make sure your settings are correct.

Is Skype installed properly?

To make sure that Skype is installed properly. Uninstall, and then reinstall Skype.
