Why am I having trouble calling a mobile or landline in Skype?

    Back to search results

If you experience trouble making a call in Skype, then it is always good to check for any current issues on the Skype Status page.

To make a call to a mobile or landline, you will need to have Skype Credit or a subscription. You can then call a number on your contact's profile or use the dial pad Skype dial pad to enter a phone number.

If you are still unable to make a call, please refer to the following table for help with resolving the issue:

    Problem

    Resolution

Are your Skype calls not connecting?

Make sure you have Caller ID enabled if your Skype calls are not connecting.

Are your Skype calls being blocked?

A specific number is being blocked by Skype
Are you trying to call a friend or family member's number, but you get a message that it has been blocked by Skype? If you know that it is a valid number, then you can report this to our customer support agents to have the number unblocked in Skype.

All Skype calls are being blocked

    • Make sure the contact you are calling is not located in a Skype restricted country such as UAE or Morocco.
    • Are you on a VPN? Disconnect from the VPN and try the call again.
    • Make sure your account has alternate contact info by signing in to your profile and updating your contact details.

Do you have enough Skype Credit?

You need to have enough Skype Credit to make a call to your destination lasting at least one minute. We recommend you check your Skype Credit balance before each call, either in Skype, or by signing in to your account. You can also check out our rates page to see how much your call will cost per minute. If you have insufficient Skype Credit, you’ll need to buy credit before making the call.

Does your subscription cover the call you want to make?

If you have a subscription, but your call won’t connect, it’s likely that you are trying to call a number or destination not covered by your subscription. Check these reasons why your call will not connect with a subscription.

Have you dialed a valid number?

Check that you have dialed the number correctly. Remember to select the country from the drop-down or enter a “+” and then the country code plus the number you want to call.

Does Skype support the number you dialed?

Skype does not support calls to all number ranges in every country. There are certain premium-priced or geographic/country specific numbers which are forbidden and cannot be reached using Skype.

Is it just one specific number you can’t call?

Due to fluctuations in the public switched telephone network (PTSN) we cannot always guarantee the quality or reliability of calls made from Skype. Such issues are usually temporary, so if you have problems calling a specific number, we suggest trying again later. If the problem persists, please report this, stating the destination and your Skype Name, to Skype Customer Service.

Is your Internet connection strong enough?

Make sure you have a strong Internet connection with the required bandwidth when you attempt to place the call. If you're on Wi-Fi, move to an area where the signal is stronger or connect to another network.
