Learn the essentials
Our how-to videos will teach you everything you need to know to get started with Skype.
You can pay for a subscription by credit card, PayPal, Skrill (Moneybookers), bank transfer and other local payment methods. You can also pay using Skype Credit if you have the required balance on your account.
You can choose to pay every month, every 3 months or every 12 months. Your subscription is renewed automatically at the end of the initial period, and the recurring payment will be made with the payment method you used to sign up1. You can cancel the subscription at any time.
To buy a subscription, just go to our subscriptions page, find the country or region that you want to make calls to and click Continue. You’ll then need to sign in to your Skype account. On the payment page, select your payment period and method. To pay using Skype Credit, choose the icon. This option is only available if you have sufficient Skype Credit available to buy the subscription.
If you pay with Skype Credit, you will need to make sure that you have enough Skype Credit on your account balance each time your payment is due; otherwise your subscription will lapse and stay in "Pending" status (meaning you won't be able to cancel it from your side, but it will get renewed as soon as there is enough Skype Credit on your account balance). We recommend setting up Auto-recharge to ensure that you always have enough Skype Credit.
If you set up auto-recharge at a level below the cost of your subscription (for example, your auto-recharge is set for 10 USD and your subscription is 30 USD), you will see multiple auto-recharge orders in your account when your subscription renews to cover the cost of your subscription.
The following frequently asked questions will help answer any questions you have about how subscription payments work.
Remember: Your subscription is renewed automatically at the end of the initial period. The payments are recurring to save you the trouble of renewing your subscription after each billing period, and to maintain access to your subscription's benefits. The recurring payment will be made with the payment method last used to purchase anything from Skype. We do not require a long-term contract, and you can cancel your subscription at any time.
Due to the time it can take for some transactions to be processed, we charge your payment method (for example, your credit card, bank account, or PayPal account) three days in advance to ensure prompt delivery of your subscription. You do not lose these three days; your subscription is still valid for the full period that you sign up for (one, three or 12 months).
To change the payment method used for your subscription payments, visit Subscription Settings in your account. You can switch to any of your stored payment methods, or add a new method such as a credit/debit card or PayPal. If you use a debit card to pay for your subscription, future recurring payments will be taken from your Skype Credit balance; so make sure you have enough Skype Credit.
To change your subscription payment method:
To authorize your credit card or PayPal account, we make a temporary payment request to your card issuer/PayPal account for € 1 (or similar amount in your currency). However, you will not actually be charged; this will simply be an authorization to verify the payment method.
If your credit card expires (or the payment fails for any other reason), we will let you know that the recurring payment failed, and give you time to change your payment method and keep your subscription running.
If you don’t change your payment details in time and your subscription expires, you have up to 90 days to reactivate it by updating the payment method. By doing this, you can maintain your current subscription settings.
After 90 days, the subscription will no longer be available, and you will need to purchase a new one.

1This applies to credit card, PayPal, Skype Credit, and some other payment methods. If you bought your initial subscription using any other payment method, your subsequent subscriptions will renew using your Skype Credit (where the balance is sufficient), unless you make a new payment for the subscription manually.
