How do I upgrade from Skype for modern Windows to Skype for Windows desktop?

As of July 2015, Skype no longer supports the Skype for modern Windows app. To continue using Skype on any other Windows device, you have a couple of options:

When you have a new version of Skype, remember to uninstall the Skype for modern Windows app.

    1. Close Skype by pressing Alt+F4 on your keyboard or by swiping from the top edge of the screen.
    2. In the Windows Start screen, right click or tap and hold the Skype tile. The Options menu appears at the bottom of the screen.
    3. Select Uninstall from the Options menu.
    4. In the window that pops up, select Uninstall to confirm. The Skype tile disappears from the Start screen.

Yes. Even though Skype no longer supports the Skype for modern Windows app, if you’re using a Windows RT tablet you don’t need to do anything – the modern app will continue to work for you.

Your chat history for the last 30 days is saved to the cloud, so you’ll see it when you sign into Skype from another device or platform.

Conversations older than 30 days will be lost when you upgrade. If you want to keep a particular conversation, you’ll need to copy and paste it.

To save a conversation older than 30 days:

    1. Find the chat you want to save.
    2. Select the text: left click or touch inside the chat and hold, then scroll up to the top of the chat. Text is selected as you scroll.
    3. When you’ve selected as much as you want, release the mouse button/screen, right click, and select Copy.
    4. Open a document (Microsoft Word, Notepad or similar), right click, and select Paste.
    5. Save the document.
