Finding your way around Skype version 4 for iOS

This article covers Skype version 4 for iOS which was originally designed for older devices that are now unable to be upgraded beyond iOS 7 from Apple. Learn more about what version of Skype you are using.

Navigating in Skype for iPhone

At the bottom of the screen you’ll see these tabs:

Options at the bottom of Skype screen

A. People. Search for your friends, add them to the list and manage your contacts. You can start here to get in touch with your friends.
B. Recent. Find your recent conversations, received messages and files.
C. Call phones. Use the dial pad to call mobiles and landlines. You’ll need a little Skype Credit or a subscription to do so.
D. Profile. Check out your account information and add or edit your personal details.

If you select a contact from your contact list, you’ll see their profile window:

E. Remove or block contact.
F. Profile picture.
G. Mood message.
H. Select the way you want to reach your friend.
I. See more details about your contact.

Navigating in Skype for iPad

When you open Skype on your iPad, you'll see the options below:

  1. Name. Your name is displayed here. Click your name to edit your picture, display and edit your profile, and update your mood message.
  2. Dial pad. Use the dial pad to call mobile phones and landlines, or to send SMS messages to your friends. You’ll only need a little Skype Credit or a subscription to do so.
  3. Add contacts. Search for your friends and add them to your contacts. You can also manually add contacts when you tap the plus sign.
  4. People. Manage your contacts and view your friends' profiles.
  5. History. View your previous conversations, received messages and files.
  6. Lists. Choose which list of contacts you'd like to view.
  7. Search. You can search your contacts by entering a contact's name, or search the Skype directory.
  8. Your contacts. The contacts in the active list (from F, above) are shown here. Tap your contact’s picture to see their profile and to call, video call or IM them.

If you select a particular contact from your contact list, you’ll see their profile window:

  1. Profile picture.
  2. The status, name and mood message of your contact.
  3. Select the way to reach your friend.
  4. Your contact’s details.
Adding contacts in Skype for iPhone

To add a new contact:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap People.
  3. Tap the list you want to add the contact to.
  4. Tap the add icon The add icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  5. Choose Search Skype Directory, Save a Phone Number or Import from iPhone/Import from iPod.

If you have chosen Search Skype Directory:

  1. Look for a contact by entering their Skype Name, full name or email address in the search field.
  2. From the list of matches displayed, select the contact you’d like to add.
  3. Tap Add contact at the bottom of the screen.
  4. You are then prompted to send a contact request. Enter some text to introduce yourself if you want, and tap Send.

If you have chosen Save a Phone Number:

  1. Enter the name and phone number of the contact you’d like to add.
  2. Tap Save.

Adding contacts in Skype for iPad

To add a new contact:

 

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap People in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. In the People screen, tap the add icon The Add a contact icon. in the top right corner.
  4. Choose Search Skype Directory or Save a Phone Number.

If you have chosen Search Skype Directory:

  1. Look for a contact by entering their Skype Name, full name or email address in the search field.
  2. From the list of matches displayed, select the contact you’d like to add.
  3. Tap Add Contact in the top right corner of their profile.
  4. You are then prompted to send a contact request. Enter some text to introduce yourself if you want, and tap Send.

If you have chosen Save a Phone Number:

  1. Enter the name, select the country code and enter the phone number of the contact you’d like to add.
  2. Tap Done to save the contact.
Update status, mood message and profile picture

To edit your profile in Skype version 4 for iOS, at the bottom right of your screen, tap Profile. You can then personalize your profile using the fields below:

  1. Profile picture: Tap the camera icon to add or change your picture. You can take a new picture or use one saved on your phone.
  2. Mood message: Tap the mood message area to type in a new mood message using your iPhone keyboard.
  3. Status: Tap Status to set your status to available, away, do not disturb, invisible, or offline.
Managing contacts in Skype for iPhone

To search for a contact:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. In the All Contacts screen, swipe down to open the search box.
  3. Enter the contact’s name, Skype Name or phone number.
  4. Tap one of the contacts in the search results to see their profile and the ways you can contact them. To stop viewing a contact, tap outside of the profile screen.

Your contacts are arranged in Lists. When you sign in, you will see the All Contacts list.

To view all your contact lists, including All Contacts, Online Contacts, iPhone Contacts / iPod Contacts and Skype Contacts, tap the Lists icon at the top of the screen. If you have created customized lists on your computer or other device, they will be shown here, too.

To block or remove a contact:

  1. Tap People.
  2. Tap the contact you want to block or remove.
  3. Tap the options icon The options icon.
  4. Tap Remove from Contacts or Block Contact.
Managing contacts in Skype for iPad

To search for a contact:

  1. Start Skype.
  2. In the All Contacts list, tap the search box and enter the contact’s name, Skype Name or phone number.
  3. Tap one of the contacts in the search results to see their profile and the ways you can contact them. To stop viewing a contact, tap outside of the profile screen.

To remove a contact:

  1. Tap and hold the contact you’d like to remove.
  2. Tap X in the top left corner of the contact’s card.
  3. Once the contact is deleted, tap the Cancel button in the top right corner of the screen.
Managing Skype notifications

Mute Chat

You can temporarily stop IM notifications for any particularly active chat by muting the chat feature.

To use mute chat, simply go into the chat you want to mute, tap the settings icon at the top right corner of the screen, and select Mute Chat.

 

Note: You can also temporarily suspend all notifications, not just those from Skype, by using Apple’s Do Not Disturb feature.

Disabling Skype notifications on iOS

If you’d like to remain signed in to Skype, but do not want notifications for new chat messages or calls, you can easily turn off notifications on your iPhone or iPad:

  1. From the iPhone/iPad home screen, tap the Settings icon.
  2. Tap Notification Center.
  3. In the Notification Center, scroll down until you find Skype and tap it.
  4. In Skype, tap the icon for None under Alert Style.

 

If you'd like to turn the notifications back on, simply go back into the Skype settings in the Notification Center and tap Banners.

Signing out of Skype

Notifications will also stop when you sign out. Make sure you have an active Internet connection when you sign out, or you might still receive notifications.
To sign out of Skype before closing the app:

  1. In Skype, tap the Profile tab at the bottom of the screen.


     
  2. In the Profile screen, tap the Sign Out icon in the top-right corner.


     
  3. Click Sign Out.

Sending instant messages in Skype for iPhone
  1. Tap People > Skype Contacts.
  2. Select a contact to view their profile, then tap IM.
  3. Type your message into the text box.
  4. Tap Send.

To send a photo in an instant message, just tap call icon  in the right corner of your screen, then select Send Photo.

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap the contact you want to IM.
  3. Tap IM to open the conversation window.
  4. Enter your message into the text box.
  5. Tap Send.

If you want to send a photo, just tap the The plus icon icon in the top right of your screen.

Making a voice call in Skype for iPhone
  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. In the bottom left corner of the screen, tap People.
  3. Tap Skype Contacts.
  4. Select the contact you want to call, then tap Voice Call.

To accept an incoming Skype call, simply tap the green call button The call button..

Useful things you can do on a call

Tap the screen during a Skype-to-Skype call to bring up the call bar:

  • Tap The camera icon. to turn your video off.
  • Tap to switch between the front and back cameras (this option is only available during an active video call).
  • Tap The microphone icon. to switch your microphone on or off.
  • Tap The speakerphone icon./The headset icon./The Bluetooth icon. to turn the speakerphone function on or off, or switch to a headset.
    If you want to switch to a Bluetooth headset that you haven’t set up yet, simply go to your iPhone’s Settings and set Bluetooth to On. Wait for your phone to discover the Bluetooth headset, and then tap it to pair the devices.
  • Tap The instant message icon. to view your instant messages.
  • Tap The end call button. to end a call.

Joining a group call

With Skype for iPhone, you can participate in a Skype group call you’re added to.

When you’re invited to a group call, you’ll see an incoming call notification screen. Simply tap the green call button The call button. to join the call.

Making a video call with Skype for iPad

To make a video call with Skype for iPad:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap People.
  3. Tap the contact you'd like to call to view their profile and tap the Video Call button.

You'll see a full-screen image of your contact’s video and your video in the bottom right corner of the screen.

During a video call, you can:

  • Tap The minimize icon to bring up or hide the sidebar, to send an IM, or to view instant messages and SMS text messages received from other contacts.
  • Tap The camera icon. to switch between the front and back cameras, or to turn your video off.
  • Tap The microphone icon. to turn your microphone on or off.
  • Tap The speakerphone icon./The headset icon/The Bluetooth icon to turn the speakerphone on or off, or switch to a headset. If your Bluetooth isn’t set up yet, just go to your iPad’s menu and tap Settings > Bluetooth, then set Bluetooth to On. Wait for your iPad to discover the Bluetooth headset, then tap it to pair the devices.
  • Tap The instant message icon. to instant message a contact you’re calling or view your IM conversation with that contact.
  • Tap The end call icon. to end a call.

With Skype for iPad you can't make video calls from the Skype dial pad.

Which camera can I use for a video call and how do I adjust the picture?

You can switch between the front and back cameras during a Skype video call. Tap the screen to bring up the call options, then tap the camera icon to choose whether you want to use your Front Camera, Back Camera or No Camera.

If you turn the camera off, you can easily turn it back on by tapping the camera icon again and choosing the camera you want to use.

If you turn your device to landscape mode, the camera picture will automatically rotate.

Receiving files

Sending images

It’s easy to send an image:

  1. Sign in to Skype and select the contact you’d like to send an image to.
  2. In the Contact Card, tap More > Send Photo.

If you use a first generation iPad and have no Video Messaging ability, the More icon does not appear. In the Contact card, tap Send Photo directly.

  1. Select an image saved on your iPhone or iPad, or take a new one. The image file can’t be larger than 25 MB.
  2. You can send your file only after your contact accepts it. You’ll see a progress bar showing you how much time is left until your image is sent. You can stop sending your file at any time by tapping x.

Receiving images

To get the image your contact is sending you, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to Skype. You’ll see a notification dialog telling you that someone wants to send you a file.
  2. Tap Accept to receive the image, or tap Decline to reject the transfer.
  3. When the file transfer is complete, the image you’ve received opens automatically.

To find the images you’ve received, open the Photos app on your iPad.

If your contact is trying to send you a different type of file, you’ll be notified of the file transfer but you won’t be able to accept the file.

Sending SMS text messages in Skype for iPhone

Sending SMS text messages using the dial pad

It’s easy to send an SMS text message using the dial pad in the Skype app:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap Call phones.
  3. Enter the mobile number and tap The text message (SMS) icon..
  4. Type your SMS text message and tap Send.

Unfortunately, the person you sent the SMS text message to won’t be able to reply you on Skype.

Sending SMS text messages to a Skype contact´s phone number

If your Skype contact has a mobile or landline attached to their Skype profile, you can send them an SMS text message:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap People.
  3. Tap a contact you’d like to send an SMS text message to.
  4. Tap More, then select SMS.
  5. Type your SMS text message and tap Send.

This works only if your Skype contact has their mobile or landline number attached to their Skype profile. If you don’t see the SMS option available, use the dial pad to enter the phone number manually. Unfortunately, the person you sent the SMS text message to won’t be able to reply you on Skype.

Sending SMS text messages to your iPhone/iPod contacts 

To send an SMS text message from Skype to a contact in your iPhone Contacts/iPod Contacts:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap People, then select iPhone Contacts/iPod Contacts.
  3. Tap the contact you’d like to send an SMS text message to, then select the phone number.
  4. Tap The text message (SMS) icon. , then enter your SMS text message and tap Send.

It’s easy to send an SMS text message using the dial pad:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap the dial pad icon.
  3. Enter the number you’d like to send an SMS text message to, then tap the SMS icon.
  4. Enter your message and tap Send.

To send an SMS text message to your Skype contact’s mobile or landline number:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap the contact you’d like to send an SMS text message to. Their profile displays.
  3. Tap More, then select SMS.
  4. Enter your message and tap Send.

This works only if your contact has their mobile or landline number attached to their Skype profile. If you don’t see the SMS option available, use the dial pad to enter the phone number manually. Unfortunately, the person you sent the SMS text message to won’t be able to reply you on Skype.

To send an SMS text message to a contact from your iPad address book:

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. Tap People > Lists > iPad Contacts.
  3. Tap the contact you'd like to send an SMS text message to, then tap SMS.
  4. Enter your message and tap Send.
